Canada’s market is largely epoxy-base / polyaspartic-topcoat systems, and this pricing reflects that. What actually drives the price
- Grinding and repair. A proper profile and filled cracks are what make the coating last through Canadian winters.
- Freeze-thaw and salt. This is why polyaspartic/polyurea topcoats dominate here — they flex and resist salt better than bare epoxy.
- Moisture. Slab-on-grade garages especially. A moisture test early removes the biggest source of quote spread.
- Location. Labour rates vary across Canada. The location-adjusted estimate uses a sourced construction-cost proxy for Toronto, Vancouver, or Regina and clearly retains the Canadian baseline elsewhere; it is not postcode-level epoxy contractor pricing.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Coat a newer slab before stains, cracks, and an old sealer make prep expensive.
- A solid-colour or flake polyurea system gives most of the durability of a metallic finish for less.
- Clear the garage completely and get a moisture reading before you book.
- Compare itemised quotes — the coating rate is similar between installers; the prep line isn’t.
Worked planning scenario
Take an illustrative 40 m² garage with spalling near the overhead-door threshold. Choose the flake or polyurea system, mark cracks or repairs, and keep the 10% contingency to see the effect of that scope. The calculator models the repair line at 15% of the base rate for Canada; it does not diagnose the damage or decide whether a moisture treatment is needed. Ask each installer to price the same repair and testing scope so the totals are comparable.

How much does an epoxy garage floor cost in Canada?
Installed pricing generally runs about $4.50–$16.50 per sq ft: roughly $4.50–$8.50 for a basic solid-colour system, $7–$12 for decorative flake, $8.50–$14 for a full high-build polyurea build, and $9–$16.50 for metallic — before extra repair allowance or contingency.
Is epoxy or polyaspartic/polyurea more common in Canadian garages?
Many Canadian installers apply a polyaspartic or polyurea topcoat over an epoxy base rather than epoxy alone, because it handles freeze-thaw cycles and road salt better and cures fast enough to walk on the next day. Buildmator's Canada pricing reflects this blended market.
Is the concrete grinding included in the quote?
It depends on the installer and system. Ask whether the quote includes mechanical preparation and crack repair, and what surface profile the coating specification requires. The calculator's Floor condition field adds a planning allowance when those items are priced separately.
Do I need a moisture test before coating a garage slab?
Ask what moisture test and limits the specified coating requires, especially for a slab-on-grade garage. Moisture moving through concrete can interfere with adhesion. Use the moisture option for planning if testing has not resolved whether treatment is needed.
Should I use metric or imperial units?
Either. Flooring is commonly quoted in square feet by Canadian contractors even though coatings are sometimes priced per square metre or per litre by suppliers, so both units are available. Switching only changes the display, not your numbers.
