Installed epoxy flooring in the US typically costs about $4–$14.50 per square foot, depending mostly on the coating system and how much work the concrete slab needs first. A basic coating on a clean slab sits near the bottom of that range; a metallic or flake finish over concrete that needs grinding and crack repair sits near the top. Markets that quote per square metre (the UK and Australia) work the same way at a different unit.
The single biggest reason two quotes differ isn't the epoxy — it's surface preparation. This guide breaks the cost down by system, by slab condition, and by floor size, using the same researched ranges and formula behind the Epoxy Flooring Cost Calculator. When you're ready for a figure for your own floor, that's where to go.
The short version
- Most installed epoxy floors in the US land between $4 and $14.50 per square foot — the same pattern holds per square metre in the UK and Australia.
- The coating system sets your starting rate. The condition of the concrete decides how far above it you end up.
- A two-car garage (about 400 sq ft) with a mid-range high-build system on a sound slab runs roughly $2,400–$5,200 before grinding and contingency.
- Ask each installer for an itemized quote. The preparation lines are often where two proposals for one floor differ.
How Much Does Epoxy Flooring Cost Per Square Foot?
Buildmator's US per-square-foot ranges are each an average of several independent published cost sources, not a single blog figure. They assume a sound, ready-to-coat slab — prep is added separately. The source column links the primary reference for each range; the full per-range breakdown is in the sources list below.
| Coating system | Installed $/sq ft (US) | Primary source |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / thin-film | $4 – $7.33 | 3-source basic-coating average (D and G Flooring, TallyMaterials, FindCoatingPros) |
| High-build / 100% solids | $6 – $13 | 3-source average (primary: RemodelingExpense) |
| Decorative flake | $6 – $11.50 | 4-source average (primary: RemodelingExpense) |
| Self-leveling | $5 – $10 | 4-source average (primary: HomeGuide) |
| Metallic / decorative | $7 – $14.50 | 4-source average (primary: HomeGuide) |
| Specialized / industrial | $7 – $12 | 2-source average (Jinyu Paint, Black Bear Concrete) |
Prices can vary based on local labour costs and material pricing in some regions.
Cost by country
Buildmator prices epoxy in five markets. Pick your country's calculator for a figure in your currency and unit; the ranges below are the basic and flake systems for orientation only.
| Country | Unit | Basic coating | Decorative flake | Basic-range source | Calculator |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | sq ft | $4 – $7.33 | $6 – $11.50 | 3-source basic-coating average (D and G Flooring, TallyMaterials, FindCoatingPros) | United States calculator |
| United Kingdom | m² | £30 – £50 | £60 – £88.33 | 2-source average (primary: MyBuilder) | United Kingdom calculator |
| Canada | sq ft | $4.50 – $8.50 | $7 – $12 | 5-source average (primary: Coated.ca) | Canada calculator |
| Australia | m² | $42 – $59 | $73 – $106 | 3-source average (primary: SuperTrades) | Australia calculator |
| India | sq ft | ₹38.33 – ₹73.33 | ₹97 – ₹170 | 3-source average (CoatCraft, IndiFrame, Swaraj Polycoats) | India calculator |
A few of these ranges are modeled rather than directly researched — derived from a defensible relationship to that country's own verified baseline where no independent published figure exists. The calculator labels which is which.
Epoxy Flooring Cost by Type
"Epoxy floor" covers several genuinely different products. The practical differences below explain the price gaps in the table above.
Basic / thin-film
Thin sealed matte surface
Thin film$4–$7.33 / sq ft
High-build / 100% solids
Thick glossy hard-wearing film
Thick film$6–$13 / sq ft
Decorative flake
Flake-broadcast, textured, sealed
Thick film$6–$11.50 / sq ft
Self-leveling
Poured flat, seamless, very smooth
Thick pour$5–$10 / sq ft
Metallic / decorative
Hand-worked marbled finish
Thick film$7–$14.50 / sq ft
Specialized / industrial
Spec-driven (chemical, ESD, thermal)
Thick film$7–$12 / sq ft
Basic / thin-film epoxy
A thin, usually water-based coating rolled onto etched or lightly ground concrete. It seals the slab, resists dust and mild spills, and is the cheapest option — but it's thin, so it wears through sooner under tyres and dropped tools. Common for a budget garage refresh or a utility room. US range: $4–$7.33 per sq ft.
High-build / 100% solids epoxy
The system most people mean by "garage epoxy". It goes on far thicker than a thin-film coating because none of the product flashes off as solvent or water, so it builds a hard, impact-resistant film in one or two coats. More material and more labour, but it's the durability benchmark. US range: $6–$13 per sq ft.
Decorative flake epoxy
A high-build base coat broadcast with vinyl colour flakes, then sealed with a clear topcoat. The flakes hide minor slab imperfections and add grip, and the topcoat takes the wear. Slightly more involved to install than a plain high-build coat. US range: $6–$11.50 per sq ft.
Self-levelling epoxy
A flowable epoxy poured in a thicker layer that finds its own level, producing a very smooth, seamless surface and correcting minor unevenness in the slab. Used where the finish has to be flat and jointless — showrooms, some commercial kitchens. US range: $5–$10 per sq ft.
Metallic / decorative epoxy
A pigmented, high-build system worked while wet to create a marbled, three-dimensional look. The material costs more and the installation is skill-intensive — the finish is largely made by hand — which is why it sits at the top of the price range. US range: $7–$14.50 per sq ft.
Specialised / industrial epoxy
Chemical-resistant, thermal-shock-resistant, ESD (static-dissipative), or heavy-traffic systems specified for a particular hazard. Pricing depends entirely on the specification, so treat any range as a rough starting point and get a quote against your actual requirement. US range: $7–$12 per sq ft.
What Affects Epoxy Flooring Cost?
Six inputs move the number, in roughly this order of impact.
Floor size
Cost scales close to linearly with area, so doubling the floor roughly doubles the coating cost. Very small floors are the exception — many installers apply a minimum job charge, so a tiny room can cost more per unit than a garage.
Coating system
As the table shows, moving from a basic coating to a metallic finish can more than double the per-unit rate before any prep is added. This is usually the second-largest lever after area.
Floor condition and surface preparation
A coating is only as good as the concrete under it, so prep is where quotes diverge. Buildmator prices each slab condition from a researched $/area figure where one exists for your country, and falls back to a modeled percentage of the base coating rate where it doesn't — the calculator adds the line automatically when you describe the slab, and labels which method it used:
| Slab condition | What it means | Modeled fallback (% of base rate) |
|---|---|---|
| Good, clean concrete | Ready to coat after a wash | +0% |
| Light preparation | Degrease, light sand or acid etch | +5% |
| Grinding required | Mechanical grinding to a proper profile | +12% |
| Cracks or repairs | Chase and fill cracks, patch spalls | +15% |
| Old coating to remove | Strip a failing sealer or coating first | +10% |
| Moisture issue / unknown | Slab not tested; possible vapour barrier | widens the top of the range only |
The percentages above are the fallback. Where a directly published $/area figure exists for a country and condition, the calculator uses that instead — and it can be well above the percentage. In the US, for example, "grinding required" is priced from a verified $1.30–$4.50 per sq ft (source: 2-source average (ArmorGarage, FloorMyPlace)), not 12% of the base. The result marks each line verified ormodeled. Verified coverage is deepest for the US (grinding, cracks, coating removal and moisture), partial for the UK, Canada and Australia, and thin for India — where every condition except old-coating removal currently uses the modeled percentage.
Cracks and repairs
Structural cracks and spalled edges have to be routed out and filled with a repair mortar or epoxy filler before coating, or they telegraph through and fail early. On a floor with more than a couple of hairline cracks, this is a real line item, not a rounding error.
Moisture
Moisture moving through a concrete slab can interfere with coating adhesion. If a slab is on grade, below grade, or untested, ask the installer what moisture testing the proposed system requires. A test can clarify whether the quote needs a moisture-control primer or another treatment.
Optional add-ons
The calculator offers five add-ons: decorative flakes, a clear topcoat, crack repair, old-coating removal, and a moisture barrier. Crack repair, old-coating removal, and the moisture barrier reuse the same researched (or modeled) figures as the matching slab conditions. Decorative flakes are modeled from the price gap between the basic and flake systems in your country — no cleanly itemised "add flakes" figure is published. The clear topcoat is a fallback estimate — a broad percentage of your base rate — because no itemised topcoat price could be independently verified. The tool also stops you paying twice: pick the flake system and the flake add-on is disabled.
Local labour and material costs
The same system installed in a high-cost metro can run well above the national planning range. Buildmator's free calculator uses national pricing; its location-adjusted estimate applies one regional factor — verified metro, then state, then modeled, then national — to the researched rate, exactly once, and tells you which level of data it used.
Epoxy Flooring Cost by Project Size
Using the US 100% solids high-build range ($6–$13/sq ft), a sound slab, and no contingency:
| Floor size | Coating cost (high-build) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 200 sq ft | $1,200 – $2,600 | Single garage bay |
| 400 sq ft | $2,400 – $5,200 | Two-car garage |
| 600 sq ft | $3,600 – $7,800 | Large garage / basement |
| 1000 sq ft | $6,000 – $13,000 | Small workshop / shop |
Add roughly 10% on top as a contingency allowance for what surfaces once grinding starts, and add the relevant prep percentage from the condition table if the slab isn't clean and sound.
Garage Epoxy Flooring Cost
For a two-car garage of about 400 sq ft on a clean slab, the calculator gives roughly $1,600–$2,932 for a basic coating, $2,400–$5,200 for a 100% solids high-build system, and $2,400–$4,600 for decorative flake — before contingency, and before any grinding or crack repair. A used garage slab may need degreasing or mechanical preparation, but the required method depends on its condition and the coating manufacturer's specification.
Residential Epoxy Flooring Cost
Inside the house — a basement, a laundry, a mudroom — the slab is often in better shape than a garage, so prep can be lighter. The trade-off is that interior floors are more often specified with a flake or self-levelling finish for looks, which lifts the coating rate. A 300 sq ft basement with a flake system on a sound slab is roughly $1,800–$3,450 before contingency.
Does Project Type Change the Price?
Not on its own. Buildmator's calculator takes a project type — garage, basement, workshop, commercial — as context for the estimate, but it doesn't switch to a different price table based on it. Two 400 sq ft floors priced minutes apart can land far apart because one is a basic coating on clean concrete and the other a metallic finish over a cracked, previously sealed slab. The drivers are area, system, slab condition, prep, add-ons, and local rates — the room's label isn't one of them.
DIY vs Professional Epoxy Flooring Cost
A DIY kit has a lower upfront price, but kit cost and installed cost are different scopes. A professional quote can include grinding equipment, crack repairs, moisture testing, primer, several coating layers, labour, and a warranty. Before comparing totals, list what each option includes. A DIY project is most predictable when the slab is dry, sound, and compatible with the preparation method specified by the product maker.
Material Cost vs Installed Epoxy Flooring Cost
Bare epoxy material is a small fraction of an installed price. The installed figure covers grinding equipment and consumables, primer, base and topcoat, flake or pigment, labour for a multi-day cure schedule, and the installer's overhead and warranty. Buildmator prices theinstalled cost, because that's the number that decides a project.
How to Estimate Your Epoxy Flooring Cost
The calculator works the estimate like this:
- C
- estimated installed cost (a low and a high figure)
- A
- floor area
- rlow..high
- researched base coating rate for your system and country
- rprep & add-ons
- per-area rates for the slab condition and any add-ons
- p
- contingency allowance, percent
Worked example — a 400 sq ft US garage, 100% solids high-build system, "grinding required", 10% contingency. The US has a verified grinding figure, so the calculator uses that ($1.30–$4.50/sq ft) rather than the modeled percentage:
| Base: 400 × $6..$13 | $2,400 – $5,200 |
| Grinding (verified): 400 × $1.30..$4.50 | $520 – $1,800 |
| Subtotal | $2,920 – $7,000 |
| With 10% contingency | $3,212 – $7,700 |
| Effective installed rate | $8.03 – $19.25 / sq ft |
Enter your own area, system, and slab condition in the Epoxy Flooring Cost Calculator — or the UK, Canada, Australia, or India version — for a range in your currency. The location-adjusted estimate goes further, using regional pricing data for your postcode. See the full methodology for how the ranges are built.
Is Epoxy Flooring Worth the Cost?
It can be worthwhile when you need a sealed, cleanable surface and the slab can be prepared correctly. A basic thin-film coating may suit a light-duty room, while a garage or workshop may justify a thicker system and protective topcoat. Compare the full preparation and coating scope, not only the decorative finish; an expensive finish cannot compensate for an unsuitable or poorly prepared slab.
Three Planning Scenarios
These are illustrative examples built from the calculator's researched rates. They are not customer projects, contractor quotes, or evidence that a particular floor will need the same work.
The clean two-car garage
A ten-year-old attached garage, 24 by 20 feet, so about 480 sq ft. The slab has tyre marks and a couple of oil stains but no cracks and no history of damp. The owner wants a flake finish that hides dust and doesn't show every tool that gets dropped. Plan: high-build base with flake, light grinding to open the surface for a good bond, 10% contingency. The coating and flake come to roughly $2,880–$5,520; grinding adds $624–$2,160. With contingency, the planning range is about $3,854–$8,448. The takeaway: when the slab is sound, the finish you choose moves the total more than the prep does.
When a lower quote omits preparation
Suppose the same-size garage has a peeling old sealer. One proposal gives only a coating rate; another lists removal, surface preparation, and moisture testing separately. They are not comparable scopes. The calculator's “old coating to remove” line shows the planning impact, but only an on-site assessment can determine the removal method and price. Ask both installers to itemise the same work before deciding which is less expensive.
The basement with a moisture question
A 350 sq ft finished basement, below grade, with no vapour barrier in the original slab. A self-levelling or flake floor is on the table. Before committing to a system, ask which moisture test and limits the coating manufacturer specifies. The result helps an installer decide whether a moisture-control primer or a different system is needed. This is why the calculator widens the top of the range, instead of assuming a single remediation cost, when you mark moisture as untested.
How the Numbers in This Guide Are Built
Every displayed rate comes from Buildmator's pricing dataset. A range may combine several published installed-cost references; where source coverage is thinner, the calculator says so, including the India ranges that rely heavily on one regional installer. When no direct figure is available, a documented modeled fallback is labeled as modeled rather than verified. Prep and add-on costs follow the same rule. The ranges are reviewed periodically — this guide was last checked on 2026-10-13. The main references are listed below; the methodology page explains the source-handling and editorial process.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does epoxy flooring cost per square foot?
Installed epoxy flooring in the US generally runs about $4–$15 per square foot depending on the coating system: roughly $4–$7.33 for a basic thin-film coating, $6–$13 for a 100% solids high-build system, $6–$11.50 for decorative flake, and $7–$14.50 for metallic. Heavy surface prep — grinding, crack repair, or moisture mitigation — adds to that. Metric-priced markets (UK, Australia) quote per square metre; see the regional calculator for your country.
How much does it cost to epoxy a two-car garage?
A typical 400 sq ft garage with a 100% solids high-build system works out to roughly $2,400–$5,200 for the coating on a sound slab, before a contingency allowance. A basic thin-film coating is lower ($1,600–$2,932); decorative flake and metallic finishes are higher. Add grinding or crack repair if the slab needs it.
Does project type — garage, basement, kitchen — change the price?
Not directly. Buildmator's estimate is driven by area, coating system, floor condition, prep, add-ons, and local pricing — not a fixed 'garage rate' or 'basement rate'. Two 400 sq ft floors can differ by thousands because one uses a metallic finish over a cracked slab and the other a basic coating over clean concrete.
Is a DIY epoxy kit cheaper than hiring a professional?
Upfront, a DIY kit costs less than a professional installation. The comparison is only useful when the scope matches: check whether each option includes mechanical surface preparation, crack repair, moisture testing, primer, and a protective topcoat. Poor preparation can shorten the life of either system.
Why do two quotes for the same floor come back so different?
The scope may differ, especially for grinding, crack repair, coating removal, or moisture control. Ask each installer for an itemized quote so you can compare the same preparation and coating work.
How do I estimate the cost for my own floor?
Measure the area, pick the coating system, and describe the slab's condition. The Epoxy Flooring Cost Calculator multiplies area by the researched low-to-high rate for that system in your country, adds researched prep and add-on costs for the condition you report, applies a contingency percentage, and shows the range with an effective per-unit rate.
