How a Buildmator calculator turns the numbers you enter into a planning range — and what that range does and doesn't tell you.

Ranges, not a single guessed number

Every Buildmator result is a low–high planning range with a typical midpoint, never a single number presented as exact. Construction and material costs vary by product, labor market, and site conditions in ways no calculator can fully know in advance — a range is the honest way to represent that.

Two different things: quantity and price

Buildmator keeps material quantity (how much concrete, how many bags, how much coating) separate from pricing (what that quantity costs where you live). Quantity comes from geometry and physical formulas — it doesn't change based on your location. Pricing is layered on top, using your own entered rate or a researched regional price range. This is why, for example, the fence calculator's bag count never changes when you add a postal code — only an installed-cost estimate does, and only if you've given it a price to work from.

Where regional pricing comes from

When you add a location on the advanced version of a calculator, Buildmator looks for the most specific pricing data it actually has — in order: a verified figure for your metro area, then a verified figure for your state/province/region, then (only if you named a specific place) a modeled estimate built by averaging other verified data for your country, and finally a national planning baseline if none of that is available. Every verified figure is sourced from a dated, published reference — never invented to fill a gap. The less specific the data, the wider the range Buildmator shows, so the estimate never implies more certainty than the underlying data supports.

Buildmator does not maintain postal-code-level trade pricing — that level of granularity isn't something published data actually supports, and pretending otherwise would be false precision.

Source freshness

Each calculator's guide content lists the specific source and the date it was last checked. Published construction cost data changes — treat older figures as directionally useful rather than current to the day, and always confirm current material and labor pricing with a local supplier or contractor.

Why a contractor's quote can differ

A Buildmator estimate is a planning range, not a contractor quote. Actual quotes commonly vary because of:

  • Product or vendor quality
  • Preparation scope
  • Labour rates
  • Warranty terms
  • Contractor margin and overhead
  • Site conditions and access
  • Supplier availability
  • Applicable taxes and fees

Use a Buildmator estimate to:

  • Set a realistic budget
  • Understand what's driving your cost
  • Compare multiple contractor quotes
  • Identify unusually high or low quotes

What Buildmator calculators don't do

Buildmator estimates material quantity and planning-level cost. It does not verify structural adequacy, code or permit compliance, soil conditions, frost depth, wind load, or site-specific complications — those depend on your local conditions and regulations, and should be confirmed with a licensed professional or your local building department before construction begins. Each calculator's own guide states what it does and doesn't account for.

Internal pricing detail

Buildmator's internal pricing engine tracks additional detail — such as exactly how confident it is in a given figure — that isn't shown publicly. That's implementation detail, not something that changes what this page tells you: ranges get wider, not narrower, wherever the underlying evidence is thinner.
